Dreaming of that perfect summers day in your garden, whether its kids out playing, basking in the sun with a G&T, or a true English BBQ with your friends and family, your lawn takes centre stage.

It’s time to put the preparation in to make that dream lawn a reality.

Getting the first cut done well is important preparation for the rest of the year. Early spring your grass is just starting to grow but not at its full strength, so you need to take care not to damage the grass. In some parts of the country, particularly the south, your lawn may be ready for a “topping”. You should aim to cut no more than 1/3 of the length of the blade on the first cut. Your mower’s blades need to be very sharp at this point, to avoid causing any damage to the grass blades. If you’ve not already had your mower serviced, get booked in with your local machinery service centre, the sooner the better so that you are ready to go as soon as the spring hits.

When is your lawn ready for its first mow?

The ground needs to be firm and some new growth appearing.

Choose a dry windy afternoon when the ground will be at its firmest

Do not attempt to mow if your lawn is still waterlogged

Check list of tips:

  • Use a mower with sharp blades
  • Take extra care on the turns
  • Mow at a slower rate than usual
  • Cut no more than 1/3 of the blade of grass
  • Check for moss. If your lawn suffers from moss growth, the spring is the best time to remedy it. RHS have a great guide to help

Once you are finished, clean your mower. As you’re not mowing as often at this time of year, make sure you clean off the blades and spray them with some protective wax to keep them rust free and sharp for next time.

Using Aspen fuel will mean that you can leave the remaining fuel in the tank and your mower will start perfectly next time. If you use regular pump petrol, then you should drain the fuel from your mower and use up any left-over fuel in your car. Do not keep any fuel in cans which you don’t plan to use within a few days as it will start to deteriorate and may cause starting problems next time.
